Corban Women’s Basketball Finds Groove, Downs Northwest Christian, 74-73

EUGENE, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team avenged its overtime loss to Northwest Christian University (NCU) on Tuesday night with a thrilling 74-73 upset victory that came down to the final seconds.

In a game that featured 11 lead changes (nine in the 4th quarter alone), it was Corban who struck the final blow. With only six ticks left on the clock and trailing by one point, senior guard Julia Young (Snohomish, Wash.) sank a pair of free throws to put the Warriors ahead 74-73. The Beacons had a chance to tie or win it, but could not convert on their last possession, sealing the victory for the Warriors.

Facing a 36-33 deficit after shooting just 18.2% from beyond the arc (40% overall) in the first half, Corban came out hot in the second stanza, shooting a torrid 57.7%, including 44.4% from downtown.

Senior guard Jade Lowery (Oregon City, Ore.) and Young paced the Warriors, scoring 21 points apiece. Young was also strong on the boards, gathering 11 total rebounds en route to a double-double performance.

Senior Payton Wilcox (Salem, Ore.) and junior Sadie Pilgeram (Helena, Mont.) also performed well for Corban, racking up 12 and 11 points, respectively.

"The ladies started off really well and even though the Beacons took the lead into halftime we felt good about how we were playing," said head coach Dave Bale. "The comeback in the second half was great. Julia and Jade had big nights but both Payton and Sadie scored, so the balanced scoring showed. The rebounding effort was great, 43-23!"

With the win, Corban (12-10, 7-6 CCC) has now won seven of its last nine games.

For the Beacons (13-8, 9-4 CCC), it is their second straight loss after winning nine of their previous ten games.

Niki Duncan led Northwest Christian with 28 points on 7-12 shooting from beyond the arc. Andrea Gloss scored 13 points for the Beacons, and Monique Thompson chipped in 11.

The Warriors continue their stretch of road games, as they travel north to Walla Walla, Wash. to take on Walla Walla University on Friday, January 29th. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m.
