ANGWIN, Calif. – The Corban University women's basketball team dominated from start to finish in its 2016-17 season-opener on Friday, defeating the Pacific Union College Pioneers on the road, 83-45. Behind a 49-point first half, the Warriors cruised to the comfortable 38-point victory.
"We started very strong and were executing well in the first quarter especially," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Then we continued into the second quarter to really play well as a team."
Corban jumped out to a huge lead right away, dominating in all facets of the game. In the first half alone, the Warriors crashed the boards and scored 15 second-chance points while also converting on 12 points off of turnovers.
The Warrior bench was critical in the first half as well, scoring 21 points to just three for the Pioneers' bench.
After building a 49-12 halftime lead, the Warriors closed out the contest efficiently, winning by the comfortable 38-point margin. Corban dominated on the glass all evening long, totaling 51 rebounds to just 24 for Pacific Union. Because of this, Corban racked up 40 points in the paint to just 18 for the Pioneers.
"It was a great start to the season, and I was really proud of the girls after the long bus ride yesterday and an early start today, we came out and competed well," said Skyles. "It was a great team win!"
Leading the way offensively was freshman forward Bri Turner with 15 points on a 6-of-9 effort from the floor. She also grabbed five boards and nabbed two steals in the victory. Senior forward Maddey Pflaumer also played well for the Navy and Gold, scoring 14 points on the afternoon on 6-of-11 shooting.
Senior forward Sadie Pilgeram, who was a double-double machine last year, hauled in her first double-double of the 2016-17 campaign, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards for the Warriors. Also putting together a solid first performance for Corban was junior guard Maci Benedict, scoring nine points, dishing out three assists, and totaling three steals.
As a team, the Warriors shot 43.8% from the field while holding Pacific Union to a 31.4% mark overall.
Corban (1-0) returns to the hardwood tomorrow afternoon when it takes on Cal State University-Maritime. Tipoff in Vallejo, Calif., is set for 2 p.m.
