Corban Women’s Basketball Finishes Road Trip Undefeated with Win at Simpson

REDDING, Calif. – The Corban University women's basketball team won again on the road on Monday evening with a 58-49 triumph over Simpson University, closing out the road trip with a perfect 3-0 record. With the three wins to start the year, it marks the first time this since the turn of the century that Corban has started a season 3-0.

"What a battle tonight was," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Simpson's record doesn't indicate how good of a team they are. They came out and jumped on us early, but our team just kept playing hard and was able to execute when needed."

Corban started the contest out cold from the field, scoring just six points in the first quarter to fall behind 14-6. The Warriors responded and cut the deficit to 22-18 by the half, however, keeping the Redhawks in touching distance.

In the third stanza, the Warriors exploded for 16 points, and then continued the momentum in the fourth quarter, scoring a whopping 24 points en route to the nine-point win over Simpson.

As a team, the Navy and Gold shot 40.4% from the field overall and just 6.7% from downtown, but when Corban needed to make stops, it did and the defense locked down. Offensively, once again it was CCC Player of the Week, senior Maddey Pflaumer leading the charge with 21 points on an 8-for-13 shooting effort. She also snagged seven boards and blocked three shots in the win.

Also playing big on the night for Corban was fellow senior Payton Wilcox, as Wilcox scored in double-digits with 14 points while recording a team-best eight rebounds. Additionally, with one of the bigger games of her career, junior Mattaea Cooper chipped in eight points and five boards, helping the Warriors finish off the comeback.

"We made some adjustments at halftime and the team did what we needed to do defensively. I am super proud of our team and how much resiliency they showed. Simpson is very good and had us scouted well, but when it came down to it, our ladies finished and I am so pleased with their efforts."

Corban (3-0) returns to action on Friday when it travels northeast to take on NCAA Division I powerhouse, Gonzaga University, in an exhibition contest. Tipoff in Spokane is set for a 6 p.m. start.
