Warrior Women’s Basketball Suffers First Loss of the Season at Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The shots weren't falling on Monday evening for the Corban University women's basketball team, and ultimately the Warriors couldn't overcome the poor shooting performance in their first loss of the season against Pacific University, 65-57.

"We struggled to get an offensive flow tonight," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "We played hard defensively and other times gave up easy scores. We desperately need some consistent practice time to get better, as we have had so many games and haven't improved without fine-tuning in practice. We will dust ourselves off and get back to work tomorrow."

Corban fell behind in the first and second quarters, and while pulling things close in the third quarter, Pacific ultimately made the timely shots down the stretch in the fourth stanza, handing Corban its first loss of the 2016-17 season.

On the evening, Corban shot just 37.5% from the field and went only 6-for-20 from long range. In addition, the Navy and Gold struggled from the free-throw line, going 9-of-17 from the stripe.

Leading the way offensively for Corban was Payton Wilcox with 17 points on a 7-for-12 shooting effort. Sadie Pilgeram scored 12 points for the Warriors, nailing a pair of three-pointers in the defeat, while Maci Benedict also landed in double-figures with 10 points for Corban.

For Pacific, Sarah Curl led the way offensively with 15 points in the victory, while Karli McHone tallied 11 points including a trio of three-pointers for the Boxers.

As a team, the Boxers (2-1) shot 43.1% from the floor while also winning the rebound battle, 41-34.

"It is a long season and we have to get back to fighting as one," said Skyles. "Always proud of our team, but never satisfied."

Corban (5-1) returns to the court on Wednesday when it hosts the University of Puget Sound. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
