Warrior Women’s Basketball Drops Exhibition to Saint Martin’s, 61-53

LACEY, Wash. – The Corban University women's basketball team outscored NCAA Division II opponent, Saint Martin's University, in each of the first three quarters of Monday night's exhibition contest, but a tough fourth quarter of shooting led to a 61-53 loss to the Saints. For Corban, the loss does not count against the Warriors' official record due to it being an exhibition.

Corban started the game strong and took an 11-10 lead after one quarter, and then a 29-27 lead at halftime thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Maci Benedict. The Warriors then extended the advantage to eight points entering the fourth quarter, but then the shooting went cold, and Saint Martin's got hot in the final stanza, resulting in the 16-point turnaround. In that fourth stanza, Corban was outscored, 22-6, and Saint Martin's held on for the exhibition win.

"We played really well for nearly three quarters and executed well against them," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Some costly turnovers and shots not falling let them back in the game, and we never recovered. I'm proud of our team for their toughness, but we have to be able to finish better. We had some players step up, and now we just need to be able to keep gaining confidence and get back on track."

Maddey Pflaumer had yet another fantastic contest for Corban, scoring 18 points to go with 12 boards, dominating inside. She went 5-for-10 from the field and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe on the night. Benedict finished with 11 points for the Warriors, also hitting double-digits.

Sadie Pilgeram chipped in with seven points for the Navy and Gold in the defeat, as did Bri Turner.

As a team, the Warriors shot 39.5% from the field and 30.8% from downtown.

Corban (3-0) returns to action next Tuesday when it takes on Lewis & Clark College on the road in Portland, Ore. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
