PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban Women's Basketball team came out hot on the road, scoring five straight points to open up the game and never looked back in a 76-68 victory over Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) foe Warner Pacific College on Friday night.
After jumping out to an early lead, the Warriors didn't let up, as junior forward Payton Wilcox (Salem, Ore.) scored seven points in the first quarter to stake Corban to a 19-7 advantage. From there, the Warriors cruised through the first half, never allowing the Knights to come within 12 points.
Warner Pacific made it close in the second half, as the Knights scored nine straight points in less than 90 seconds, highlighted by a 3-point shot from Taylor Howlett, to cut the lead to two points with only six minutes left to play. Corban recovered, with junior guard Sadie Pilgeram (Helena, Mont.) sinking a clutch shot from beyond the arc to give the Warriors some breathing room and essentially seal the victory.
"Great effort by the Warriors to win on the road," said Corban head coach Dave Bale. "We shot the ball really well to open up a nice lead and the ladies kept their composure when Warner made their runs. We now have the tie-breaker should they catch us."
Senior Jade Lowery (Oregon City, Ore.) led Corban offensively with 22 points on 8-17 shooting to go along with eight assists. Additionally, Julia Young (Snohomish, Wash.) and Wilcox each chipped in 18 points, while Pilgeram added 11 points and eight rebounds to the mix.
Howlett paced the Knights with 14 points, while Daesha Jackson added 12.
With the win, Corban has now won 10 of its last 13 contests, while Warner Pacific has dropped five straight.
The Warriors (15-11, 10-7 CCC) will take the road again Saturday, February 13 when they take the court against Multnomah University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
