Corban Baseball Splits with Simpson in Rainy Affair

STAYTON, Ore. – After dropping the opening game of a rainy doubleheader with Simpson University (Calif.) in 10 innings, 6-5, the Corban University baseball team bounced back in game two as the bats woke up, winning 15-8 in game two to earn the day-one split.

"We were lucky to get the games in today," said Corban head coach Jeff McKay. "It was a long wet day. We didn't play or pitch like we are capable. Hope we can get the games in tomorrow. Tomorrow is a new day. Go Warriors!"

In the opener, Simpson's Dylan Mumford hit a solo shot over the left field wall at Stayton High School, giving the Red Hawks the early 1-0 advantage. Simpson made it a 4-1 ballgame in the sixth thanks to solid pitching from its starter, James Humphrey, who went 7.1 innings for the Red Hawks.

Corban pulled two back in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game, but an error in the top of the ninth put Simpson back up by two.

In the bottom half of the ninth, however, senior left fielder Landon Frost (Bend, Ore.) came up clutch for Corban, looping a two-RBI single to left field, scoring the tying runs for the Warriors. With a chance to win it in that same inning, Corban was unable to take advantage, sending the contest to extras.

In that 10th frame, Simpson scored the one run it needed to on a Jarrett Kirby RBI single, resulting in the one-run triumph over Corban. As a team, the Red Hawks totaled 15 hits to just nine for the Warriors in game one.

In game two, with the rain really coming down hard, Frost led the bottom half of the first off with a solo shot to right field, giving Corban the early lead. Senior designated-hitter Hayden Calvert (Canberra, Australia) stepped up to the plate in the same inning and bettered Frost's home run with a longer solo home run of his own, crushing one deep past the right field fence.

In the fourth inning while up 4-2, senior first baseman Braden Wolgamott (Bellevue, Wash.) laced another solo home run for the Warriors, with this one carrying over the center field wall.

Simpson pulled one back in the fifth, but the Warriors opened up the flood gates in the sixth and seventh, scoring seven runs over the course of the two innings. The Red Hawks continued to hang around, however, scoring two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth.

Corban ultimately loaded the bases and scored two more runs in the eighth before closing it out in the ninth, sealing the game-two triumph.

Frost finished the game with three hits and two RBI for the Warriors, while junior shortstop Ryan Rosas (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) also totaled three hits, scoring three runs as well. Wolgamott finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored, while freshman second baseman Daniel Freiburger went 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Navy and Gold at the dish.

On the bump, sophomore lefty Connor Mattison (Salem, Ore.) went five strong innings to earn the win, allowing three hits and three runs while striking out four.

For the Red Hawks, Dylan Mumford totaled three hits and three RBI in the loss.

Corban (6-11, 3-5 NAIA West) returns to the diamond tomorrow at Stayton High School for another doubleheader with Simpson (2-19, 2-5 NAIA West) to close out the series. The first game at 10 a.m. will be a conference contest, while the second game of the day will be played as a non-conference contest. Live stats will be available online.
