Warrior Baseball Breaks Out Bats, Steals Two From Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Corban University Baseball team bounced back from a tough loss yesterday to sweep Oregon Tech in a doubleheader on Saturday. Putting their offensive woes behind them, the Warriors notched 25 runs on 32 hits to secure a conference series victory.

"The Warriors had a good day with the bats today, led by a career day by Jackson Smith," said head coach Jeff McKay. "We are improving our offensive approach, situational hitting, and two-strike mentality."

Game 1: Corban 13, Oregon Tech 5

Game one started off well for Corban, as freshman Daniel Freiburger (Rupert, Idaho) led off the game with his first career homerun of Owl starter Tyler Bennett.

After a few scoreless innings, the Warriors broke out offensively, batting around and scoring a season-best 10 runs in the top of the fourth frame. Davis Alderman (Kennewick, Wash.) doubled to start the inning, and it all unraveled from there for Oregon Tech. Highlighted by two hits from both Vince Gonzalez (Kennewick, Wash.) and Jackson Smith (Salem, Ore.) – who had four RBI in the inning – Corban used nine hits and two walks to unleash the double-digit output and push the score to 11-0.

The Warriors added two runs in the ninth frame on a two-run triple by Hayden Calvert (Canberra, Australia).

Oregon Tech got on the board in the fifth inning, when Corban starter Caleb Henry (Salem, Ore.) ran into some trouble. Henry allowed four runs in 4.2 innings before Daniel Gober (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) came on to earn the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Jarett Thoren (Nampa, Idaho) pitched the last three innings and earned the save for the Warriors, allowing just one run.

Gonzalez paced the Warriors offensively with four hits, while Smith notched three hits along with four RBI. Alderman ripped three hits as well, and Freiburger, Calvert, Ryan Rosas (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), and Landon Frost (Bend, Ore.) all tallied two hits each.

After the game, Smith talked about his performance:

Michael Kilpatrick went 2-4 for the Owls, knocking in three runs. Bennett picked up the loss on the mound for the Owls.

Game 2: Corban 12, Oregon Tech 3

In game two, the Warriors jumped out early once again, this time taking advantage of four errors by the Owls defense, along with three hits, to stake themselves to five run first inning lead. Wolgamott had the key hit with an RBI single.

Corban extended its lead in the third frame, when another RBI single by Smith and a squeeze bunt by Rosas bumped the score to 7-0.

Oregon Tech eventually got on the board against Warrior starter Rilyn Lewchuk (Oregon City, Ore.), scoring a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cut the lead to four. That was all the Owls would get, though, and Corban put the game away with another four runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by an RBI by Gonzalez. The Warriors would add another unearned run in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Lewchuk earned the win for Corban with five innings of three-run ball. Thoren threw a scoreless inning in relief, and Austin Holmes (Mount Lake Terrace, Wash.) hurled three scoreless innings to earn the save.

Wolgamott, Smith, Gonzalez, and Benjamin Liogon (Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico) each compiled two hits for the Warriors, with Smith racking up another two RBI on the day.

Wolgamott shared his thoughts on the day after the games:

Danny Topps, Ryan Grant, and Colton Hinrickson all notched two hits for the Owls. Starting pitcher Evan Johnson picked up the loss.

"We made good adjustments defensively as a whole. Shortstop Ryan Rosas has returned to his impressive defensive game. The bullpen came up big in all three games of the series. It can be a strength of this team. The team is beginning to find its identity and is coming together. We are surviving some growing pains and are showing the signs of consistency as we battle through a tough conference schedule."

Corban (9-12, 6-6 NAIA West) will play the fourth and final game of the series against Oregon Tech (9-20, 2-10 NAIA West) Sunday morning at 11 a.m. It will be a non-conference game.
