VANCOUVER, B.C. - The Corban University baseball team competed well on the road, but had trouble getting on the scoreboard, as the Warriors dropped both parts of a doubleheader against NAIA West opponent University of British Columbia (UBC) on Saturday afternoon.
On a sunny day just north of the border, the Warriors and the Thunderbirds showed off their pitching and defense. Runs were at a premium, with only five runs total being scored on the day. UBC came out on top in both games, however, notching 2-0 and 2-1 victories.
"Two very tough losses against likely the two best pitchers in the conference," said head coach Jeff McKay. "We could just not figure them out. Henry, Gober, Mattison, and Aranda threw very well for the Warriors, but the offense did not match their effort. It was a very beautiful day. The sun was nice to play in."
Game 1: UBC 2, Corban 0
In the first contest, Corban had a prime opportunity to jump out in front of the Thunderbirds early, with Landon Frost (Bend, Ore.) getting hit by a pitch to lead off the game. After stealing second base, a sacrifice bunt gave the Warriors a great scoring chance. However, Corban was unable to take advantage, stranding a runner on third base. That was the only real chance the Warriors would get, however, as Alex Webb allowed only three hits in a complete game performance to earn his sixth win of the season.
The only scoring in the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when UBC plated two runs off starting pitcher Caleb Henry (Salem, Ore.), who threw six innings and earned the tough-luck loss for the Warriors. Daniel Gober (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) hurled two scoreless innings in relief.
Benjamin Liogon (Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico) notched all three hits for the Warriors. Anthony Olson and Locas Soper both had two hits for the Thunderbirds.
Game 2: UBC 2, Corban 1
In game two, junior Connor Mattison got the nod against UBC and threw well, holding the Thunderbirds to only two runs in 4.2 innings. Unfortunately for Corban, the offense was once again unable to get anything going, mustering up just three hits for the second game in a row.
While Mattison only gave up five hits on the day, three of them came consecutively in the bottom of the third inning, as back-to-back triples by the Thunderbirds ultimately resulted in both UBC runs. Daniel Aranda (Lebanon, Ore.) threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for Corban.
In the top of the fourth, the Warriors finally got on the board when Hayden Calvert (Canberra, Australia) launched a solo homerun - his third of the season - to cut the lead to one.
Corban had a chance to tie the game in the ninth inning, as Kyle Kilian (Prosser, Wash.) got aboard with a one out single, but a Thunderbird double play ended the threat and sealed the doubleheader sweep for UBC.
Calvert had the lone RBI for Corban, with Kilian and Jalen Garcia (Billings, Mont.) each notching one hit apiece.
Corban (3-10, 1-4 NAIA West) will take on UBC (19-5, 5-0 NAIA West) in another doubleheader tomorrow at Thunderbird Park. The first game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and will be a conference matchup. The fourth and final game of the series is non-conference and will be played after the conclusion game three.
