Warrior Baseball Rides Masterful Pitching Performance to Day Two Sweep of UBC

VANCOUVER, B.C. - The Corban University Baseball team bounced back from a couple of tough losses yesterday to sweep the second day of a doubleheader against NAIA West foe University of British Columbia (UBC) on Sunday.

The Warriors won another low-scoring contest in game one, notching a 1-0 victory, before finally exploding for nine runs in the series finale.

Game 1: Corban 1, UBC 0

In game one, Corban was able to string together just enough offense to get a run on the board, and Warrior starting pitcher Rilyn Lewchuk (Oregon City, Ore.) stifled the Thunderbird hitters in a stellar complete game shutout performance. Lewchuk allowed only three hits, while striking out four, and did not walk a batter in his first win of 2016.

The lone run of the contest came with two outs in the top of the third inning, when senior Landon Frost (Bend, Ore.) laced an RBI double to score Ryan Rosas (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), who singled earlier in the inning.

Frost led the Warriors, who made the most out of a three-hit performance offensively, with two hits, while Rosas had the third and final hit for Corban.

"Rilyn threw a masterpiece against a very good offensive team in game one, and that was certainly his best performance as a Warrior," said Corban head coach Jeff McKay. "The defense all weekend made good plays in key situations."

Game 2: Corban 9, UBC 3 (Non-Conference)

In game two, UBC got on the board quickly, notching a run in the bottom of the first inning against Warrior starting pitcher Austin Holmes (Mount Lake Terrace, Wash.).

In the top of the third frame, Corban finally broke through offensively, lacing four hits - capped by an RBI double by Braden Wolgamott (Bellevue, Wash.) - to put the Warriors ahead 3-1. The Warriors put another run on the board in the top of the fifth.

UBC battled back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Warriors responded in their next go-round with six straight hits en route to another five runs, staking them to a 9-3 advantage and securing a series split. After Daniel Freiburger (Rupert, Idaho) and Kyle Kilian (Prosser, Wash.) got aboard via base hits, Frost and Benjamin Liogon (Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico) hit back-to-back RBI singles and then scored when Wolgamott torched a two-run triple. Davis Alderman (Richland, Wash.) hit an RBI single to finish the scoring.

Daniel Gober (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) earned the win in relief for the Warriors, allowing two runs in two innings of work. Jarett Thoren (Nampa, Idaho) notched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, and Adam Shumka (White Rock, B.C.) threw a perfect inning as well.

"The offense excelled well in game two and showed what it is capable of doing," said McKay. "A young and inexperienced team responded very well today after heartbreaking losses yesterday. This is as tough a conference as there is in the country. Braden Wolgamott really gave us a spark with his three key hits. Road conference wins are tough to get, and this team is showing signs of coming together as a lot of different players have contributed."

Corban (5-10, 2-4 NAIA West) will return home on March 11-12 to take on Simpson University (0-17, 0-3 NAIA West) in a four game series. The first pitch on Friday, March 11th, is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Volcano Stadium in Keizer, Ore.
