BOX SCORE 2 Butte, Mont. – Four matches. Four wins. Corban University volleyball has started off it 2016 campaign just the way it had hoped, and with two more victories on Friday at the Big Sky Classic, the Warriors are continuing to find ways to win.
"The team had to dig down deep today," said Corban head coach Kim McLain. "We really struggled in the last match against Montana Western with their offense. It was great to be able to come from behind in the fifth set for a win!"
In 2015, Corban competed in the Big Sky Classic, losing against both Montana State University-Northern and the University of Montana Western in straight sets. A new year, a new team, and this season's edition of Warrior Volleyball downed MSU-Northern in four sets (20-25, 31-29, 25-14, 25-18), and then won in dramatic fashion against Montana Western (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 16-14).
In Friday's opener against MSU-Northern, the Warriors hit for a solid .406 mark, but MSU-Northern hit for an incredible .643 percentage in the first stanza, taking the early advantage.
Corban responded in set two and won a back-and-forth thriller that turned the tables on the momentum of the contest as a whole, taking the set 31-29. With all of the momentum on its side in the third and fourth sets, Corban cruised and won comfortably in both, earning its third match win of the 2016 campaign.
It was a host of individuals that got it done offensively, as junior Amber Parker and freshman Lauren Condon both led the way offensively with 13 kills apiece, while juniors Alaina Gentili and Bethany Filipenko both added 10 kills as well. In addition, sophomore Kinley Hickok provided a presence up front, totaling 10 kills with a .467 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Madison McLain dished out a team-best 35 assists in the triumph, while both McLain and Wells tallied 12 digs apiece.
As a team, Corban hit for a .304 mark overall while holding MSU-Northern to a .261 mark.
In the second contest of the day, the Navy and Gold put together a real gritty performance. Even when not playing well against Montana Western, the Warriors found a way to win, ultimately coming from 13-10 down in the final stanza to capture the 16-14 fifth-set triumph to seal the match win.
Corban hit its best when it needed to most, attacking at a .375 clip in the final stanza en route to the match win. Parker led the way in the victory, totaling 21 kills, while Filipenko notched 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Condon and Gentili both once again had standout games, registering 10 kills apiece, while freshman Adriana Aguayo came through big for the Warriors with nine kills.
McLain provided the Warriors with 38 assists, while it was a total team effort defensively, as five different players racked up 10 or more digs, with Condon recording a team-best 16 digs.
As a team, Corban only hit for a .172 mark, but defensively, the Warriors held Montana Western to just a .112 hitting mark, resulting in the Corban win.
Corban (4-0) returns to action tomorrow when it has its second match of the year with Carroll College (Mont.) at 10 a.m. PST, and then will take on Montana Tech at 2 p.m. PST.
