Errors Doom No. 24 Warrior Volleyball in Five-Set Loss at Northwest Christian

EUGENE, Ore. – Untimely errors doomed the No. 24-ranked Corban University volleyball team on Tuesday night, as the Warriors dropped a five-setter (25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 19-25, 18-16) to Northwest Christian University on the road.

Corban now has just one win in five-set matches on the year to go with three losses in five-set matches.

Serving for the match up 16-15, Corban missed a serve, giving the Beacons the serve back and the advantage. Two-straight errors then after that finished the Warriors off, resulting in the 18-16 fifth-set defeat.

"We came into the match with a lack of focus and were not ready to play," said Corban head coach Kim McLain. "In this conference, you must be ready to play!"

The Navy and Gold fell behind big in set one and ultimately were unable to recover in the set loss. The Warriors responded in set two and seemed to be back on track with the comfortable seven-point win, but once again, NCU (4-7, 2-3 CCC) responded and fought back in set three to regain the advantage.

In set four, Corban outlasted NCU to force the fifth and final set, and in the back-and-forth final stanza, the Warriors came up short. In that final set, Corban hit for just a .095 mark offensively, while the Beacons hit for a .417 mark. On the night, Corban hit just .179, well below its season average of .229.

Junior Alaina Gentili led the way offensively with 20 kills, while fellow junior Amber Parker totaled 15 kills for the Navy and Gold. Defensively, junior Haley Wells recorded 25 digs, while freshman Lauren Condon totaled 17 digs to help keep Corban afloat.

Service errors throughout the match proved to be costly, as the Warriors hit 10 total, making it 108 total service errors on the year for Corban.

For NCU, Kendall Bergsten totaled a team-best 19 kills, while Taylor Burnett registered 16 kills in the triumph.

Corban (7-4, 3-2 CCC) returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Walla Walla University for another Cascade Collegiate Conference contest. First serve in College Place, Wash., is set for 3 p.m.
