PORTLAND, Ore. – After a slow start in Portland on Friday evening, the Corban University women's basketball team responded in a big way in the second half, eventually downing Multnomah University in dominant Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) victory, 70-44. For Corban, the win marked the team's fourth-straight victory in CCC action.
"We were pretty flat the first half, offensively, but did a good job defensively," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "We came out much better in the second half and were in a good flow offensively in the third quarter."
Corban began the game with an 8-0 offensive spurt and things looked to be going well, but then the shooting went cold for the remainder of the first stanza, and after the first 10 minutes of play, the Warriors and Lions were tied at 10-10. The two sides battled in the second stanza and traded buckets, but ultimately the Warriors continued to lock down defensively toward the end of the quarter and finished strong, taking a seven point lead into the intermission.
In the second half, Maci Benedict came out firing for Corban, nailing back-to-back long-range efforts early on in the third quarter to give the Warriors all of the momentum. Corban would go on to score 30 points in the stanza – four more points than the team scored in the entire first half.
From that point on, the Warriors showed that they would not let up on the defensive end, allowing Multnomah to score just eight points in the final quarter while cruising to the 26-point triumph.
Much of the second half was highlighted by the standout play of rookie Bri Turner, as she finished the contest with 14 points on a 7-for-10 effort from the floor to go with six boards. For Turner, it marked the second-most points she'd scored in a Warrior uniform. After the game, she talked about her performance:
Also scoring 14 points on the night was Benedict, as she nailed a quartet of shots from downtown. Additionally, Maddey Pflaumer finished in double-figures with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Sadie Pilgeram tallied eight points and a team-best 12 boards in the road triumph.
As a team, Corban shot 34.7% for the contest while holding Multnomah to just a 21.5% mark.
"I was very proud of the girls and how well they stepped up in the second half," said Skyles. "We had some great production from a variety of players, and we are looking forward to how we respond tomorrow."
For the Lions, Miranda Schmillen tallied a team-best 12 points, while Kayla Hyppolite scored nine and Faith Krattz finished with eight.
Corban (10-7, 4-5 CCC) remains on the road tomorrow when it travels north once again to Portland to take on the Warner Pacific College Knights. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
