PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team showed that it has true resiliency on Saturday evening, registering a big come-from-behind victory on the road at Warner Pacific, 59-50. For the Warriors, the win marks the team's fifth-straight triumph overall.
"Warner Pacific came out and played well," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "We were flat and weren't playing well together, but then we changed things up at a timeout and the girls responded very well. We rallied and it took all we had to finish out the game with a victory."
Even when not playing its best, the Warriors showed grit and fight, battling through a tough-offensive showing in the first half to only be down by seven points at the halftime break. Corban shot just 29.63% in the first 20 minutes, resulting in just 24 first-half points.
The Warriors responded in a big way in the second stanza cutting the deficit to just two points headed into the fourth quarter, and then in the final stanza, the Warriors locked Warner Pacific down defensively, allowing the Knights to score just six points. On the offensive end in the final quarter, the Warriors put up 17 points en route to the nine-point victory.
At one point in the second half when trailing by 14 points, the Warriors called a timeout, and then after the timeout, Corban went on a 28-5 run that ultimately was the difference, resulting in the key come-from-behind victory.
Sadie Pilgeram led the way for the Warriors with 16 points, including nailing four shots from downtown in the win. In addition, Payton Wilcox was efficient from the field, scoring 11 points on a 3-for-6 shooting mark, while Maddey Pflaumer finished with another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"I am proud of the way the players rallied and our team came together to support one another through the tough times," said Skyles."
As a team, Corban shot 35.5% from the field and 25.9% from beyond the arc. Defensively, the Warriors held Warner Pacific to a 37.7% shooting mark and forced the Knights into 20 turnovers. From those 20 turnovers, Corban converted them into 17 points.
For Warner Pacific, Kyeli Hendryx led the way with 18 points for the Knights, While Bailey Allen totaled 14 points.
Corban (11-7, 5-5 CCC) returns back to Salem for its next four games, with the first two against College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon University. Tipoff on Friday vs. C of I is set for 5:30 p.m.
