Corban Women’s Basketball Wins Third Straight, Defeating Northwest 78-56

SALEM, Ore. – For the third-consecutive contest, the Corban University women's basketball team put together a dominating performance, and on Saturday night against Northwest University, it was a big second half that led to a 78-56 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) triumph over the Eagles.

"Northwest came out strong in the first half and they had us scouted well," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "They were very aggressive defensively and we had a hard time getting into a flow, but we made some adjustments at the half and the girls were able to execute well."

While having to adjust the game time due to the snowy weather, it was the Warriors that actually began the game cold, and it was Northwest's Charmaine Bradford who started off hot for the Eagles, nailing a couple of long-range efforts while giving the road squad the early lead. Corban responded, however, regaining a 16-12 advantage by the end of the first stanza.

In the second quarter, the sides traded buckets, but by the half, the Warriors led 38-35. The second half is when Corban really locked down defensively, only allowing the Eagles to score nine points in the third quarter and then just 12 more in the fourth quarter, all the while Corban was scoring at an efficient rate, leading to the blowout 22-point win.

Corban finished the game shooting 45.3% as a team while holding Northwest to just a 27.9% mark overall. The Warriors also hit eight shots from downtown, while the Eagles sank seven from deep.

"I was very pleased with the defensive effort and rebounding," said Skyles. "We shared the ball well and reduced our turnovers significantly in the second half. I am super proud of our team and how well they executed this weekend."

Corban dominated on the glass, holding a 60-32 edge in rebounds for the contest. Additionally, Corban shared the ball offensively all afternoon long, racking up 15 assists.

Individually, Sadie Pilgeram totaled a team-best 17 points to go with seven boards, while Maddey Pflaumer scored 15 points to go with 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Also tallying a double-digit effort was Maci Benedict with 11 points for Corban.

For the Eagles, Mariah Stacona recorded a game-high 20 points with four long-range efforts to her name, while Bradford finished the afternoon with 16 points.

Corban (9-7, 3-5 CCC) takes to the road next week at Multnomah University and Warner Pacific College. Tipoff on Friday and Saturday is set for 5:30 p.m.
