"It felt good to be back on the floor and see our guys flying around and competing," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "They were anxious to get out and compete against other people. I was very pleased with our defensive intensity to start the game as it set the tone. It will be challenging to repeat that performance, but that will be the goal moving forward."
Dating back to December 4, 1987, the Warriors had made a three-pointer in 999-consecutive games leading up to Tuesday night in Salem. The Warriors wasted no time making it 1000-straight, as after just a couple of minutes, Jake Love spotted up and drained a three-point attempt, making NAIA history.
While riding dominant defense early and efficient shooting, the Warriors jumped out to a 28-0 lead against the Deacons, now allowing New Hope to score until the 10:50 mark in the first half.
By halftime, the Warriors extended their advantage to 56-18, and Corban didn't let up in the second half, pouring in 73 more points en route to the 71-point triumph. In the win, all 16 Corban Warrior players on the roster scored at least two points.
Chris Martin led the way off the bench for Corban, going 8-for-10 from the field and 7-for-9 from distance for 26 total points. Joel Johnson provided a highly efficient evening in the post, scoring 16 points with eight rebounds on an 8-for-9 shooting mark. In addition, AJ Monterossi tallied a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists, while off the bench, it was Tyler Simmons who scored 14 points in just six minutes of action.
As a team, the Warriors sank 17 three-pointers, with seven different players sinking one from downtown.
"Our guys played extremely unselfish as we had 27 assists and always looked for the next open man. We'll look to improve in practice and prepare for a tough road stretch starting this weekend," said Johnson."
As a team, Corban shot 57.0% from the field and 44.7% from deep. Defensively, Corban locked down and held New Hope to just a 28.8% field-goal mark on the night.
Corban (1-0) returns to the hardwood this Friday and Saturday at the Taylor Cliett Invitational up in Kirkland, Wash. The Warriors will take on Grace Bible College on Friday at 6 p.m, and then Vancouver Island University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
