"Tonight was a gritty team win against a very tough team," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "Simpson will have success this year in their league I have no doubt. Our guys were once again extremely unselfish with 18 assists and just three turnovers. Our ability to take care of the ball and our effort on the offensive glass was what sealed the game."
After a slow start, Corban got hot from the floor offensively in the first half, with both Chris Martin and Jake Love making shots from beyond the arc to put the Navy and Gold in front. By the end of the first 20 minutes, the Warriors had built the lead to 10 points at 47-37.
In the second half, Simpson made a run right away and cut into Corban's advantage, but the Warriors staved off the run and maintained their lead, and down the stretch it was a variety of players getting involved in the win. Whether it was Love with a three-pointer, or Beau Roggenbach hitting a key shot down low, Corban held on for the big non-conference triumph.
"Our guys earned the right to get the win, and hopefully we can build off this weekend moving forward," said Johnson. "Dozier, Kirichenko, and Roggenbach gave us a great spark off the bench rebounding and finishing inside."
Love finished with the game with a team-best 16 points, while both Martin and AJ Monterossi tallied 15 points and dished out four assists. In addition, Caleb Dozier provided a spark off the bench with 10 points and seven boards on a 5-for-8 shooting effort.
As a team, Corban shot 42.3% overall and 40.9% from deep. In addition, the Warriors were 76.2% from the charity stripe in the triumph.
Corban (3-2) returns to the court on Tuesday evening for an exhibition at Concordia University (Ore.). Tipoff in Portland is slated for 7 p.m.
