KIRKLAND, Wash. – The (RV) Corban University men's basketball team had a chance to win the game on Saturday on its final possession, but a turnover resulted in no shot being attempted and a one-point loss for the Warriors to Vancouver Island University, 98-97.
"I was much happier with our effort tonight in regard to competing and energy," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "It is a long season, and we'll keep trying to find ways to improve."
Corban once again fell behind in the first half, allowing Vancouver Island to put up 58 points in the first 20 minutes, and the Warriors headed into the halftime break trailing by 10.
The Warriors stormed back and actually took the lead late on when Chris Martin caught fire, draining four-straight three-pointers to make it 92-91.
Vancouver Island fought back, however, and eventually had a 98-97 lead with 11 seconds left, setting up Corban's final possession. The turnover on that final possession though, proved to be costly for the Warriors.
AJ Monterossi led the way with 18 points, while Martin also chipped in with 18 points off the bench, with all of his buckets coming from deep. In addition, three other players scored in double-figures, with Jake Love tallying 15, Joel Johnson with 13, and Christian Drayton totaling 12 points to go with a team-best 11 rebounds.
The Warriors (1-2) return to action on Monday when they travel to take on Western Oregon University in an exhibition. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Monmouth.
