SALEM, Ore. – Led by Mariah Stacona's 23 points, the Northwest University women's basketball came to Corban University and downed the Warriors on Friday night, 82-70. Turnovers haunted Corban on the evening, as the Warriors turned it over 25 times in the defeat.
"We didn't execute well on either end of the floor tonight and giving up 35 points on turnovers will kill any team," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "I give Northwest all the credit for coming in ready to play and fighting for the win. We have to regroup and come back tomorrow for another tough matchup."
Stacona was hot from start to finish, totaling her 23 points on a 9-for-19 shooting effort while also dishing out five assists and nabbing six steals. She drained four from downtown as well, as the team hit nine from long range overall. On top of her 23 points, Kalee Fowler tallied 19 points and Hannah Carlson recorded 15 points in the win. Additionally, Miranda Langenhorst scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebound for the Eagles.
As a team, Northwest shot 43.1% overall and 40.9% from deep. At the charity stripe, the Eagles went 11-for-16, whereas Corban shot just 38.9% on the evening from the line. Overall as a team, the Warriors actually shot a better overall percentage at 50.0% from the field, but the 25 turnovers ended up sealing Corban's fate, as the Warriors only shot the ball a total of 56 times compared to 72 shots for Northwest.
Despite leading after the first quarter, the Warriors were outscored in each of the remaining three quarters, as the Eagles (5-8, 2-3 CCC) picked up their game defensively in the 12-point triumph.
For Corban, the 25 turnovers resulted in 35 points for the Eagles, whereas Northwest only committed 10 turnovers.
Individually for the Navy and Gold, Emily Yost led the way with 17 points, while Lindsay Asplund totaled 12 points and nailed a trio of shots from deep. No one else hit double-figures for Corban in the defeat.
The Warriors (7-6, 3-3 CCC) return to the court tomorrow when they host The Evergreen State College at 5:30 p.m.
