SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team finished the 2017 calendar year with a bang on Saturday, coming from behind to defeat The Evergreen State College in overtime, 70-65. In what was a game that saw the Geoducks lead for much of the night, a big second half led the Warriors to the come-from-behind triumph.

"What a battle we had tonight," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "I was pleased with how the girls battled back tonight and were able to bear down and get the win. Evergreen is well-coached and I'm glad we were able to grind."

Evergreen came out hot on the night, outscoring the Warriors in both the first and second quarters while playing lock-down defense during the first 20 minutes. By halftime, the Geoducks led, 31-22, holding Corban to just a 23.53% shooting effort.

In the second half, Corban turned the game around and cut the deficit to just three points heading to the fourth quarter thanks to holding Evergreen to just a 26.3% shooting mark in the third stanza.

In the final quarter Corban made a free throw to extend the advantage two points late, but a layup in the waning seconds of regulation by Evergreen's Japhera McEachin tied the game. The Warriors had a shot go in as the buzzer sounded, but it was deemed to have been a little bit too late, sending the contest to overtime

In the overtime period, Shaelie Burgess had the key offensive rebound and put-back bucket to give the Warriors the lead late, and Corban would hold on for the five-point overtime triumph.

"Shaelie had a huge game tonight in her first start," said Skyles. "And we had great nights from Treasure and Lindsay as well!"

Burgess finished with eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with four blocks. Emily Yost provided the offensive punch on the night for Corban, scoring 16 points to go with 12 rebounds. In addition, Treasure Farmer tallied 11 boards in the important victory for the Warriors.

For Evergreen, Cherish Moss led the way with 17 points and four boards, while Cayla Jones also had a very productive night, totaling 17 points while dishing out six assists. In addition, Alexis Higginbotham scored nine points and recorded seven rebounds for the Geoducks.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well on the evening, as Evergreen notched a 28.8% shooting mark overall while Corban was only slightly better at 31.6%.

Corban (8-6, 4-3 CCC) returns to the court next Friday when it heads north to Portland to take on Warner Pacific College, while Evergreen heads back home to host Eastern Oregon next Friday in CCC action.
