Warrior Women’s Basketball Stumbles at Warner Pacific, 72-65

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team made it a one-point game late on in Friday's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contest, but the Warriors ultimately fell to the Warner Pacific College Knights, 72-65.

"We have to continue to find ways to score and understand the things that are costing us games," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Our kids made some adjustments that worked, but we have to continue to play at that level."

On the night, Corban actually shot at a more efficient clip (46.2%) than Warner Pacific did (43.1%), but 22 turnovers proved very costly for the Warriors, leading to 24 points off of those turnovers for WPC. On the other side, the Knights took care of the ball fairly well, only turning it over 13 times.

The Warriors had a lead late on in the first half, but Warner Pacific scored a late bucket to take a one-point lead and then stole the ball on Corban's final possession and went the length of the court for a fast-break layup.

Leading by three points at the break, the Knights came out and extended the advantage in the third and fourth quarters, holding a comfortable lead for much of the half. Corban made its run late in the fourth quarter and almost got over the top, but it was too little too late for the Warriors in the defeat.

Hannah Shore led the way for the Navy and Gold in the defeat, scoring a team-best 13 points. Emily Yost was efficient from the field with 12 points on a 6-for-8 shooting effort while also hauling in 12 boards. Additionally, Shaelie Burgess totaled 10 points and two blocked shots, while Maci Bozett landed in double-figures with 11 points.

"Hannah Shore had an amazing fourth quarter with her speed, passing, and defense," said Skyles. "Emily had another solid night as well. We don't have time to be down, we have to pick ourselves up and be ready for tomorrow."

Corban (8-7, 4-4 CCC) returns to the court on Saturday night when it takes on Multnomah University. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
