WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Corban allowed 52 second-half points on Sunday and the Walla Walla University men's basketball team downed the Warriors by three points, 83-80. For Corban, the loss to the Wolves came a night after beating the same team by 16 points.
"Credit to Walla Walla as they were ready to go from the tip both nights," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "Our guys played hard and battled which I was proud of, but we need to start better. We'll regroup and prepare for a busy week of games."
The Warriors played much of the first half from behind, but ended up taking a 34-31 lead into the halftime break thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Chris Martin.
The second half saw the Wolves shoot 50.0% from the field, however, while also going 18-for-24 from the charity stripe, and Walla Walla built a sizeable lead late in the contest and was able to hold on at the end, seeing Corban's regulation buzzer-beater rim out.
Corban almost pulled off a miracle comeback late, making a number of three-pointers to give the Warriors a chance at the end to tie it, but the hole Corban put itself in proved to be too large.
AJ Monterossi led the way with 22 points and Joel Johnson added 16 points and eight rebounds while Caleb Dozier tallied 13 points and 10 boards. In addition, Martin finished in double-figures with 12 points.
For Walla Walla, Jacob Vargas led all players with 28 points on a 10-for-14 shooting effort in the upset win over the Warriors.
Corban (5-3, 2-1 CCC) returns to the court on Tuesday night on the road at New Hope Christian College. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
