SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Warner Pacific College squad on Friday night, falling to the Knights, 93-75. The win gives the Knights the season sweep of the Warriors
"We ran into a hot Warner team tonight," said Corban head men's basketball coach Austin Johnson. "We struggled to keep them in front of us all night and they made us pay consistently. We'll have to defend at a higher level tomorrow to be successful."
Warner Pacific jumped in front early on with a few three-pointers, led by Josh Thomas with a pair of deep shots from beyond the arc to put the Knights in front. Corban responded with a few three-pointers of its own, with Jake Love, Chris Martin, and Caleb Dozier all hitting long-range efforts in the first 20 minutes.
The Warriors went cold midway through the first half, however, and the Knights took advantage, building a 12-point lead by the break at 44-32.
In the second stanza, Corban would try to cut into the lead on multiple occasions, but for every big run the Warriors made, Warner Pacific had the answer, hitting a big three-pointer or converting on multiple shots at the rack, finishing the Warriors off for the 18-point triumph.
Leading the way for Warner Pacific was Thomas with 23 points, while both Collin Malcolm and De' Corrius Sampson-Young each had 15 points in the victory for the Knights. As a team, Warner Pacific shot 55.9% overall as a team, and went 42.9% from beyond the arc.
For Corban, Martin tallied a team-best 18 points to go with a team-leading eight assists, while Dozier added 15 points on a 6-for-10 shooting effort from the floor. Both Joel Johnson and Jake Love added 11 points for Corban in the defeat.
Corban shot 45.2% from the field and 34.8% from beyond the arc in the loss.
Corban (14-13, 7-10), which has already clinched a spot in the 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament, now has three games remaining that will help in deciding what see the Warriors land at in the conference tournament.
CCC STANDINGS
The Warriors host Multnomah University tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Night. The Senior Night festivities are set to begin just before tipoff.
