SALEM, Ore. – Multnomah University came into the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center on Saturday evening and spoiled the Corban University women's basketball Senior Night celebrations, defeating the Warriors 66-61. The victory gives the Lions the season split with the Warriors.
"Multnomah had a great game plan and they executed it as well as they could have," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "They hit big shots and played lock down defense. We fought to close the gap, but we just couldn't get over the hump."
Corban played well offensively and defensively in the first quarter, jumping out to a 19-13 lead after the first 10 minutes. In the second quarter, things went south offensively, as the Warriors were only able to muster up five total points while allowing 15, trailing at the break 28-24.
In the third quarter, the Lions extended their lead to six points heading to the final stanza, and that is when Maddey Pflaumer turned things on offensively. While scoring on a number of and-one plays and keeping the Warriors in the game with a number of buckets, the Lions seemingly had an answer for every big Corban bucket, and down the stretch, the Lions made the necessary free throws to seal the contest.
"I wanted the game so badly for our seniors and our team as a whole," said Skyles. "I'm thankful for the tremendous fan support and our bench providing a lot of energy. It was a tough loss tonight, but Multnomah gets all the credit in the end. We have to brush it off and regroup before a tough road test next weekend."
For Multnomah, Ana Wakefield led the Lions with 14 points, while Valerie Wakefield totaled 12 points and Miranda Schmillen tallied 11 points. As a team, Multnomah shot 37.5% overall and 57.1% from deep. The Lions also took care of the ball, only turning it over 13 times compared to 21 turnovers for the Warriors.
Pflaumer finished the night with 26 points, and 20 of the points came in the fourth quarter – a new school record for points scored by an individual in a quarter. She went 9-for-15 from the field and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe to go with eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
Also finishing in double digits was Maci Benedict with 14 points and three assists. The Warriors shot 40.4% overall, but just 31.6% from beyond the arc.
Corban (14-12, 8-10 CCC) returns to the court next week when it travels to Oregon Tech on Saturday and Southern Oregon on Sunday. Tipoffs are set for 1 p.m. both days.
