Turnovers Plague Warrior Women’s Basketball in Four-Point Loss against Eagles

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Despite holding a lead throughout much of the contest on Friday evening, turnovers and a tough shooting night led to a defeat at Northwest University for the Corban University women's basketball team, falling to the Eagles, 62-58. For the Eagles, the win gives them the season split with the Warriors.

"We started the game playing so well defensively, but weren't scoring as well as we should have," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "It set the tone for the rest of the game. We had too many turnovers, missed layups, etc., to beat a good team. I'm disappointed for the girls and losing another close game. We must get mentally ready for our next test. Northwest played more aggressively and were well prepared for us."

The Warriors played dominant defense in the first quarter, taking a 15-6 lead after the first 10 minutes. Corban then maintained a 26-19 lead at the halftime break.

In the second half, however, Northwest's offense got rolling, scoring 22 points in the third quarter to cut Corban's lead to just one, and then in the fourth quarter, the Eagles didn't let up, scoring 21 more points while forcing a number of key turnovers late, securing the four-point win.

Corban finished the game with 27 turnovers, a season-worst mark. The Warriors did crash the glass, totaling 48 boards to just 37 for the Eagles, but it was Northwest turning the ball over just 19 times that ended up helping spur the Eagles' comeback.

Northwest was led by Mariah Stacona with 19 points, while Miranda Langenhorst tallied 15 points in the comeback win.

Corban was paced by Maddey Pflaumer with 14 points and seven boards to go with three blocks and one steal, while Payton Wilcox grabbed 10 rebounds and scored nine points. In addition, Sadie Pilgeram totaled nine points and seven boards in the defeat.

Corban (13-10, 7-8 CCC) returns to the hardwood tomorrow when it takes on The Evergreen State College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
