LEWISTON, Idaho – The Corban University baseball team left 13 runners on base on Sunday, and ultimately the Warriors lost the only game played on the day against No. 12-ranked Lewis-Clark State College, 8-1. The second game of the day was halted midway through the contest because of rain, and the contest will be finished when the teams play in late April in Keizer.
"We really struggled in game one with runners on base, only scoring one run on 15 hits," said Corban head coach Jeff McKay. "We will regroup this week and get ready to make a good run at the second half of the season in April."
Corban totaled 15 hits on the day compared to just nine for LCSC, and Benjamin Liogon went 4-for-4 to lead all players in hits on the afternoon.
Corban put two runners on base in the first inning but was unable to score, and then in the second frame, the Warriors loaded the bases with nobody out and things looked promising. Two strikeouts and a groundout later, however, LCSC was able to get out of the jam unscathed.
Lewis-Clark State would score two runs in the third, four more in the fourth, and then sealed the deal in the eighth to build a sizable eight-run lead.
Corban battled back in the ninth, loading the bases once again with nobody out. Vince Gonzalez delivered for the Warriors with an RBI single to get the Navy and Gold on the board, but that would be all Corban would get, as eventually the game ended on a ground-out double play.
On top of Liogon's 4-for-4 performance at the dish, Zach Penrod went 3-for-5 at the plate while Gonzalez tallied two hits on the afternoon.
Corban (10-18, 4-11 NAIA West) returns to action next Saturday and Sunday when it travels to play at Oregon Tech. First pitch in Klamath Falls on Saturday is set for 12 p.m.
