Dominant Pitching Leads to Warriors and Yotes Splitting Day One Doubleheader

CALDWELL, Idaho – The story of Saturday's NAIA West doubleheader between the College of Idaho Yotes and the Corban University baseball team was pitching, as a pair of shutouts led to a Saturday split between the two squads. After C of I won game one, 1-0, Corban bounced back and dominated game two, 5-0.

"Rilyn was outstanding in game one," said Corban head coach Jeff McKay. "It was too bad we could not get him runs. We had a very well-pitched game again, but the offense has been in a funk since coming back from southern California which is something we will need to figure out. We did play really well defensively in game one."

Lewchuk tossed eight innings for the Warriors in the opener, dispersing eight hits while striking out seven and giving up just one run on a home run in the seventh inning to Cole Mansanarez. Offensively, Corban was able to generate just five total hits in the defeat, with Jackson Smith tallying two of the five.

In the second game of the day, Tony Davidson and Austin Holmes combined to throw a complete-game shutout, with Davidson tossing five innings and giving up six hits to earn the win, while Holmes threw four frames while allowing four hits in the save. Corban pitchers did not allow one walk all day long in the split.

Offensively, Corban got on the board in the second via a sacrifice fly from Zach Penrod. The game remained at 1-0, however, until the seventh inning when Tyler Reitz registered an RBI single and then Josh Ebert recorded an RBI groundout to make it 3-0.

In the eighth inning, Ethan Bragg put on the finishing touches to the win with a solo home run, and then Daniel Freiburger ripped an RBI double to complete the five-run conference victory.

At the dish, both Reitz and Vince Gonzalez tallied a pair of hits in the win for the Warriors.

"Game two saw another sparkling performance from our pitchers and defense," said McKay. "We made good adjustments offensively and had good situational hitting."

Both Corban (8-11, 2-4 NAIA West) and the College of Idaho (8-11, 1-1 NAIA West) return to the field tomorrow to close out the series with two more conference contests. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. PST.
