FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 9-ranked Corban University volleyball team dropped two more matches to ranked opponents at the Hope International Summer Slam on Thursday, first losing to No. 7 Westmont College (Calif.) in five sets before dropping the final match of the tournament to No. 16 Cornerstone University (Mich.) in four sets.

"We have continued to improve, but we must minimize our unforced errors and learn how to finish," said Corban head coach Kim McLain.

Corban's match against Westmont proved to go down the wire quite often, as after dropping set one to Westmont, 25-18, Corban then battled with the GSAC foes in a 34-32 heartbreaking set two loss. Despite having numerous opportunities to claim the set win, Corban was unable to register the key kill or defensive stop at the important moment.

Corban finally prevailed in set three in a barn-burner, 26-24, and then dominated set four, 25-12, forcing a fifth stanza.

In that fifth set, Corban held a lead for almost the entirety until the end when Westmont closed out for the 15-13 triumph.

Amber Parker led the way offensively in the defeat with 21 kills, while Adriana Aguayo chipped in 15 kills. Cierra Leopoldino tallied 28 assists for the Warriors, while Madison McLain dished out 27 assists. Defensively, Haley Wells totaled 25 digs in the defeat.

In Corban's final match of the tournament against Cornerstone, the Warriors dropped three more sets while being right on the brink of winning them. After losing the first set, 30-28, Corban bounced back to claim a 25-18 set-two triumph before dropping sets three and four by scores of 25-23.

In that first-set defeat, Corban staved off eight-straight set points to keep the stanza alive. The Warriors then had opportunities of their own to win the set, but Cornerstone rallied to eventually close out the Warriors and take the early advantage. While Corban did bounce back in that second set, it was Cornerstone that showed the ability to finish strong in those third and fourth sets.

Corban (1-3) returns to the hardwood next week on the road when it takes on Dordt College (Iowa) on Thursday, August 24.
