ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Corban University volleyball team registered its first two wins over top-25 ranked opponents during the 2017 season on Saturday, taking down No. 15 Doane University (Neb.) in straight sets (27-25, 25-20, 25-22) before defeating Northwestern College (Iowa) in a five-set thriller (25-21, 27-29, 25-23, 23-25, 18-16). For the Warriors, it marks a sweep of the Red Raider Classic with four triumphs overall at the tournament.
"Today was a challenge, and confidence-builder for us, playing against Doane, and coming out with a three-set victory," said Corban head coach Kim McLain. "Our match this afternoon with Northwestern was a hard-fought back-and-forth match against a team who has all of the weapons to qualify for nationals! I was very proud of the girls for accomplishing their goals for the weekend and fighting to the end, never giving up!"
In the first match of the day against a tough Doane team which had been steamrolling its opponents at the tournament, Corban rallied for an exciting 27-25 win in the first set and never looked back en route to the straight-set triumph.
Adriana Aguayo led the way with 13 kills, while Cierra Leopoldino totaled a team-best 17 assists in the win. Defensively, Haley Wells racked up 16 digs for Corban to lead the way.
In the afternoon matchup against the No. 13-ranked Red Raiders, Corban found itself trailing 16-7 in the first stanza, but a furious rally proved to be the difference and catapulted Corban over the top to gain the early advantage. While Northwestern responded with a two-point set victory in the second period, the Warriors responded and took the third set by two points.
After the Red Raiders claimed set four by a pair of points, the Warriors kept to the familiar theme, and in the fifth and final set, won by two points in dramatic fashion, 18-16.
In the victory, Lauren Condon was the difference-maker for Corban, tallying 23 digs while also chipping in five kills and a pair of service aces. Offensively, Alaina Gentili and Amber Parker led the way with 17 kills apiece, and Madison McLain recorded 28 assists to keep Corban's offense flowing throughout the match.
Corban (5-4) returns to the court next weekend on the road at Warner Pacific College on Friday night and at Multnomah University on Saturday evening.
