CALDWELL, Idaho – The No. 16-ranked Corban University volleyball team went toe-to-toe with one of the best in the NAIA on Friday night, but ultimately the Warriors came up short against No. 8-ranked College of Idaho, losing in four sets on the road (20-25, 20-25, 26-24, 23-25).
"We came out ready to fight and it was a battle," said Corban head coach Kim McLain. "Their defense was relentless with a great presence at the net!"
College of Idaho racked up 68 kills to just 50 for Corban with the Yotes hitting at a .280 clip on the evening to just a .227 hitting mark for the Warriors. Oddly enough, Corban's least efficient set offensively (set three) was the set which the Warriors won, hitting at a .143 clip.
Despite going ahead early in every set, the Warriors were unable to finish off the Yotes in either of the first two stanzas, as C of I (14-1, 6-1 CCC) rallied and finished strong en route to taking the two sets to none lead.
The Warriors showed resiliency, however, winning set three in dramatic fashion, 26-24, sending the match to a fourth set.
Corban staved off a number of match points in the final period, but the Warriors were unable to get over the top, resulting in the tough Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) defeat.
Bethany Filipenko and Marandah Boeder proved to be Corban's two most effective players in the loss, as Filipenko swung for a team-best .412 hitting mark with nine kills, while Boeder totaled 11 kills at a .350 hitting percentage.
Defensively, Lauren Condon recorded a team-high 15 digs, while Haley Wells chipped in seven.
Corban (10-6, 5-2 CCC) returns to the court tomorrow at Eastern Oregon University. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
