LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 16-ranked Corban University volleyball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday night after a tough loss on Friday, dominating the No. 12-ranked Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers with a straight-set sweep (25-22, 25-20, 25-18). The loss snapped Eastern Oregon's historic 50-match Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) regular-season home winning streak, dating back to 2012.
"I was proud of the way the team bounced back after a tough loss last night," said Corban head coach Kim McLain. "They came in focused with a relentless, never-give-up attitude which continued throughout the match!"
On top of snapping EOU's 50-match home conference winning streak, it also ended the Mountaineers' 15-match home win streak overall (non-conference and conference) and its current five-match winning streak during the 2017 season. Moreover, it was a big win for the Warriors, helping to begin a new trend against EOU after losing to the Mountaineers in the CCC Tournament Championship match in five sets last year on that same court.
Corban showed poise from start to finish, starting each set strong while also finishing off the Mountaineers in each set. While hitting at a .246 clip offensively on the evening, Corban held EOU to just a .175 hitting mark on the night, consistently recording the big dig or block at the net en route to the straight-set sweep of the Mountaineers.
The Warriors improved in each set, showing that while Corban may have lost on Friday at C of I in four sets, the Warriors are still very much in the hunt for the CCC regular-season title with both EOU and C of I and others, as with much of the CCC regular season still to be played, all teams still have much to play for.
Adriana Aguayo proved to be very effective on Saturday evening, hitting at a .345 clip with 14 kills, while Amber Parker racked up 13 kills with a .300 hitting percentage. In addition, Demi Winters hit .750 at the net with three kills, while Alaina Gentili recorded nine kills for the Navy and Gold.
Defensively, it was Haley Wells with a team-best 16 digs, while Gentili was dominant at the net, totaling six block assists in the victory. Dishing out the assists were Cierra Leopoldino with 22 assists and Madison Milligan with 15 assists.
Corban (11-6, 6-2 CCC) returns to the court tomorrow when it takes on Walla Walla University. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. in Walla Walla.
