Corban Baseball Stumbles in Season-Opening Doubleheader at William Jessup

LINCOLN, Calif. – The Corban University baseball team held early leads in both games of Saturday's season-opening doubleheader, but neither advantage would ultimately hold, resulting in a pair of defeats to William Jessup University. After dropping the opener, 8-3, the Warriors lost the nightcap in seven innings, 7-3.

"It was obviously not the start we wanted to get off to for the season, but it was good to play the game of baseball with these guys," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "Sometimes, we forgot how lucky we are to be playing a game in a free country. The boys played hard, and if they can continue to play our way of baseball, we will have better days ahead of us. We will be back at it tomorrow."

In the 2018 season-opener, Tanner Marsh got Corban on the scoreboard first with an RBI groundout in the second inning, and then Ethan Bragg added an RBI groundout in the third to give the Warriors a 2-0 advantage.

William Jessup responded, however scoring two in the third and five in the fourth en route to winning, 8-3.

Late on in the contest, Drew Loera provided some fireworks for Corban with an eighth-inning solo home run, but it was too little too late. Loera finished 2-for-4 at the dish with the one RBI. Jarett Thoren also went 2-for-4 in the loss.

Game two started off with a real bang when Josh Ebert led off the first inning for Corban with a solo shot over the left-field fence to make it 1-0 immediately. Daniel Freiburger registered an RBI single to center field later in the frame to make it a 2-0 Corban lead.

Once again, however, William Jessup responded and scored five unanswered runs before Corban answered back with a run of its own in the fifth to make it a two-run ballgame. William Jessup closed out the pre-planned seven-inning contest, however, with two more runs en route to the 7-3 triumph.

Five different players registered a hit for Corban in the loss, and it was Ebert that scored two of Corban's three runs.

The Warriors (0-2) are back in action tomorrow when they take on William Jessup (2-0) for another doubleheader to close out the series. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
