KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Corban University women's basketball team came out on the losing end of a back-and-forth battle with the Northwest University Eagles on Saturday night, falling by a score of 78-73.
"We battled for 35 minutes tonight, but we needed to finish better," said head coach Michelle Skyles. "Our kids played hard, we just have to be able to play to win and be confident that we can finish."
Northwest came out of the gates strong, limiting Corban to a mere nine first-quarter points en route to the 18-9 advantage at the end of the opening stanza. The Warriors responded well in the following quarter, however, bringing the deficit within one at the midway point. The lead exchanged hands multiple times in the second half, with both teams vying for the upper hand. In the end, a late Northwest run proved too much to overcome, as the Eagles outscored the Warriors 23-14 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Maci Bozett paved the way for the Warrior offense, leading the squad with 14 points, while also racking up three steals and a pair of assists. Shaelie Burgess added 12 points of her own, finishing with seven rebounds on the evening.
The Warriors shot well in the contest, going 42.2% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range. Turnovers proved to be a costly factor in the loss, as Corban finished with 26 on the night, as opposed to Northwest's 14.
"Once again, turnovers seemed to be our demise," said Skyles. "We won almost every statistical category, but lost in the points battle and in the turnover battle."
For the Eagles, Mariah Stacona delivered an incredible individual performance, tallying 25 points, eight steals, and six assists. Andie Kristinat (16 points, five rebounds), and Kalee Fowler (14 points, seven rebounds) also made significant impacts on both sides of the ball.
Northwest (7-15, 4-9 CCC) shot 42.5% from the field, and an impressive 42.9% from beyond the arc.
Corban (10-12, 6-9 CCC) will be back in action next weekend for the Navy and Gold's final home games of the regular season. The Warriors will host Multnomah University on Friday, and Warner Pacific University the following night, with both games scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start. In addition, the Warrior seniors are set to be honored prior to Saturday night's contest.
