Warrior Men’s Basketball Upended by No. 25 Warner Pacific in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team held a lead for long portions of the first half, but the No. 25-ranked Warner Pacific College Knights proved to be too much on the evening, downing the Warriors, 91-73.

"We battled, but at the end of the day, we made too many mental errors to be able to withstand a full 40 minutes of great basketball by Warner Pacific," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "Credit to them for their energy and toughness. We definitely had some bright spots, but we will need to be better if we want to win tomorrow."

Corban kept a good pace to the game throughout much of the first 20 minutes, keeping the Knights from gaining any real momentum. Late in the first half, however, Warner Pacific got hot from the field and drained a few three-pointers heading into the halftime break, giving the home side a nine-point advantage.

In the second half, Corban began well with three-consecutive three-pointers, cutting the deficit to just five points at one point. For every big run the Navy and Gold made, however, the Knights had the answer, sinking a long-range effort of their own or getting inside for a layup. In the end, the Warriors could never get over the top as Warner Pacific finished out the 18-point win.

For Warner Pacific, Xavier Cannefax led the way with 28 points, while Collin Malcolm totaled 24 points in the triumph for the Knights.

Chris Martin led the way offensively for Corban (10-6, 4-4 CCC), scoring a team-best 26 points on a 7-for-10 shooting effort, including going 4-for-6 from deep and 8-for-9 at the charity stripe. Also hitting double-figures for the Warriors was Joel Johnson with 12 points. On the boards, Caleb Dozier grabbed a team-leading 13 rebounds on the evening.

Corban shot 40.3% overall as a team and 50.0% from downtown. On the other end, Warner Pacific shot 51.4% as a team from the field in the triumph.

Turnovers hurt Corban in the loss, as the Warriors turned it over 14 times as compared to the Knights (12-4, 7-1 CCC) only committing seven turnovers.

Corban returns to the court on Saturday evening when it travels back to Portland for another Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contest, this time against Multnomah University. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
