KIRKLAND, Wash. – Joel Johnson went 12-of-13 from the field and scored 26 points on Saturday night, lifting the Corban University men's basketball team to a 96-87 triumph over NAIA Division I foe, the University of Providence (Mont.). The win for the Warriors was a big one, as it handed the Argos (4-1) their first loss of the campaign.
"Providence made some really tough shots in the second half and made a push the last 8-10 minutes, but we were able to withstand their run and finish the game," said Corban head coach Mitch Freeman. "We showed toughness for 40 minutes tonight and are understanding how to win."
Corban was efficient all over the court throughout the game, shooting 54.7% from the floor as a team and 42.3% from deep, making 11 total three-pointers in the win. Another key to the victory was dominating the glass, owning the 45-29 advantage in the category.
A back and forth first half saw the Warriors take a two-point lead into the halftime break, but a fantastic start to the second stanza had Corban up by 19 points with 9:16 remaining in regulation.
Down the stretch, the Argos made a run at the Warriors, but Corban remained calm, closing out the contest for the nine-point victory.
In addition to Johnson's 26 points, nine boards, and two blocks, Beau Roggenbach scored 22 points to go with a team-leading 13 rebounds on a 7-for-13 shooting mark from the floor.
AJ Hodges chipped in 18 points, nailing a trio of shots from distance, while Tyler Wadleigh totaled 10 points for Corban.
Corban (6-1) returns to the hardwood on Thursday, November 15, when it travels to Portland to take on Lewis & Clark College. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
