Corban Volleyball Falters against Top-Seeded Dordt in Four Sets

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The third-seeded Corban University volleyball team shocked top-seeded Dordt College (Iowa) in the first set on Wednesday evening, but the Defenders responded by winning three-straight stanzas en route to the four-set triumph (24-26, 25-16, 25-10, 25-19). The loss puts Corban in a showdown on Thursday night with Reinhardt, with the winner of the match earning Pool E's second berth into the NAIA Final 16.

"I was proud of how the girls came out to play today," said Corban head coach Kim McLain. "Dordt is a well-seasoned team, and in the end, came out on top. We are excited to get ready for tomorrow's match!"

Because of Reinhardt's five-set victory over The Master's (24-26, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-10), it sets up the pivotal Thursday match between the Eagles and the Warriors, with the winner of the match earning their second 'pool play' victory and a spot in the NAIA Final 16.

In the dramatic first set on Wednesday, as the Warriors came from seven points down late in the stanza, ultimately winning 26-24 to give Dordt the set defeat. The Defenders, which swept the Warriors earlier in the year in Iowa in a non-conference match, provided a powerful response, however, rattling off three consecutive set triumphs to secure their sport in the NAIA Final 16.

On the evening, Avari Ridgway had a career-best performance, racking up 17 kills on a .278 hitting mark, while Adriana Aguayo totaled 13 kills for the Navy and Gold. As a team, Corban hit at just a .082 clip offensively.

Jadyn Mullen dished out 25 assists in the defeat, while Leopoldino tallied 15. Defensively, Kealani Ontai totaled a team-leading 17 digs, while Lauren Condon also reached double-digit digs with 11.

In the win, Dordt (29-2) swung for a .248 hitting mark as a team while also totaling 24 block assists and two solo blocks defensively.

Corban (22-12) returns to the court in Sioux City at 4 p.m. PT on Thursday against Reinhardt. LIVE STATS/LIVE VIDEO will be available here.
