REDDING, Calif. – After dropping game one on Saturday in walk-off fashion, 8-7, the Corban University baseball team bounced back with a dominant game-two triumph over Simpson University, 12-3.
"The boys battled back after a disappointing game-one loss," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "I was proud of the way they played game two. Once we find the ability to repeat performances, we will be in a much better position. Hopefully we see that tomorrow."
The Warriors held a 5-1 lead after a big third inning against the Red Hawks in game one, and after six innings, it was 6-4. Corban scored in the seventh to make it a three-run advantage, but then Simpson responded with two in the bottom half of the frame and then tied it in the eighth with one run. In the ninth inning, the Red Hawks capped off the comeback win with a walk-off single.
In the defeat, Corban totaled 15 hits as a team, with Cory Finlay leading the way at the dish with a 3-for-4 performance.
Game two was a bit of a different story, although it started out the same in the third frame when the Warriors tacked on five runs to the scoreboard. This time, however, the offense didn't let up scoring four more runs in the fourth en route to dominating in the 12-3 victory, evening the series at one game apiece.
In the nine-run triumph, Corban racked up 17 hits as a team with four different players tallying three apiece. Jarett Thoren went 3-for-5 at the plate with a team-leading three RBI, while Daniel Freiburger and Drew Loera both went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. In addition, Ben Ross went 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Moreover, David Yoppini flexed his muscles at the plate, blasting one over the fence for his first-career home run while donning the Navy and Gold.
On the mound, Kris Jackson earned the victory, tossing seven innings while scattering nine hits, allowing three runs in the process.
Corban (5-5) will finish its four-game series with the Red Hawks on Sunday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader. The first game is slated for nine innings and the second for seven frames. Live stats will be available HERE.
