ASHLAND, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team led by one point with 4:32 left in regulation on Saturday night at Southern Oregon University, but the Raiders then scored 15 unanswered points and secured a 78-66 triumph over the Warriors. The win gives the Raiders the regular-season sweep of the Navy and Gold.
"Tonight was a tough game as we struggled to score for long stretches," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "Credit to SOU for their attack and game plan. We'll need to bounce back for a quick turnaround against a very good Oregon Tech team."
Andrew Evans was hot from the field early on for the Warriors, nailing a couple of shots from distance early to put the Warriors up by 10 points midway through the first stanza. In addition, Chris Martin sank a shot from deep, as did AJ Monterossi, and by halftime, the Warriors led, 37-34.
In the second stanza, the Raiders came out strong and took the lead immediately. The lead shifted a few times over the course of the half, and after a big three-pointer from Monterossi and a bucket down low from Joel Johnson, Corban held the one-point advantage with 4:32 remaining on the clock.
That was the point where Corban went cold, however, and the Raiders got hot, finishing the game strong while the Warriors lost their rhythm, resulting in the 12-point defeat.
For the Raiders (18-9, 12-5 CCC), Tate Hoffman scored 17 points on 5-of-17 shooting from downtown, and he also pulled down a career-best 16 boards. In addition, Ben DeSaulnier tallied a team-leading 19 points, while Jordan Hunt scored 15 points in the late deciding run that secured the game for the Raiders.
For Corban, Joel Johnson was efficient down low, going 9-for-12 from the floor for 19 points while grabbing 12 boards. In addition, Monterossi totaled 12 points for the Warriors in the defeat.
As a team, Corban shot 43.1% overall, while SOU shot 48.4% from the field. Corban went 3-for-12 from the free-throw line, while the Raiders went 8-for-9 at the charity stripe.
Corban (14-12, 8-10 CCC) returns to the court on Sunday night when it takes on Oregon Tech. Tipoff in Klamath Falls is slated for 6 p.m.
