Warrior Women’s Basketball Stumbles at No. 10 Southern Oregon, 86-65

ASHLAND, Ore. – The No. 10-ranked Southern Oregon University Raiders downed the Corban University women's basketball team on Saturday evening, defeating the Warriors, 86-65. For the Raiders, it gives the squad from Ashland the season sweep of Corban.

"Southern is too good to only play a part of the game against them," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "At times we did some really good things, but they had a couple of kids that were on fire tonight. Kendra Murphy played really well, and Maci had eight assists which was great."

Corban kept things close during the first 20 minutes, and thanks to a couple of nifty Jordan Woodvine drives and finishes, the Warriors trailed by just 12 points at the halftime break. During those first two quarters, Corban shot 42.9% from the floor while committing 10 turnovers. On the other side, the Raiders shot at a very efficient clip, going 21-for-40 in the first two stanzas.

Down just 12 points heading into the third quarter, the Warriors went cold offensively during the next 10 minutes with only 10 points, while during that same time frame, the Raiders caught fire on the offensive end, scoring 26 points en route to extending the lead to 28 points heading into the final quarter.

Despite outscoring the Raiders in the final quarter by seven points, Corban was unable to pull itself out of the big hole, resulting in the 21-point defeat.

"I was pleased to be able to outscore them in the fourth," said Skyles. "Our kids executed well, so it was a good way to finish. We have to regroup and get ready to compete in another tough one tomorrow."

Leading the way for the Warriors on the evening was Kendra Murphy with 12 points on a 4-for-6 shooting effort, while Lindsay Asplund was Corban's next highest scorer with nine points. As a team, the Warriors shot 45.8% from the floor while Southern Oregon shot 46.8% overall. The difference in the game, however, was that the Raiders took nearly 30 more shots than Corban did, creating a number of second-chance opportunities.

For SOU, Remi Mejia totaled a team-leading 31 points, while Ariel Augustine tallied 18 points in the win.

Corban (12-13, 8-10 CCC) returns to the hardwood tomorrow afternoon at Oregon Tech. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
