EUGENE, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team scored first on Wednesday evening and never trailed en route to defeating Northwest Christian University on the road, 71-69. The win marks the third-straight for the Warriors over NCU, dating back to last year's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament quarterfinal.
The victory for Corban also secures the No. 6 seed in the upcoming CCC Tournament, and the Warriors will find out this weekend who they will play in next week's quarterfinal.
"Our guys did a tremendous job of maintaining their composure against a team that really pressures for 40 minutes," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "We talked about not letting one mistake turn into two or three, and our guys did that tonight.
Corban shot 43.9% as a team on the evening, while hitting just 27.8% of its shots from beyond the arc. The Warriors were effective from the charity stripe when they got there, however, going 8-for-11 on the night.
Individually, Joel Johnson led the way with 16 and 17 boards, while AJ Monterossi chipped in 15 points, and Caleb Dozier recorded 14 points for the Warriors in the win.
"Dozier and Johnson set the tone and our guards did a great job of finding them," said Coach Johnson. "Overall, it was a great game plan by Coach Pynch and Biviano, and our guys trusted and executed it."
Corban (16-12, 10-10 CCC) now awaits the weekend ahead to find out who it will be playing in the CCC Tournament Quarterfinals. In addition, Corban will play one more non-conference contest on Saturday night in preparation for the CCC Tournament, taking on Portland Bible College on the road at 7 p.m. Stay tuned at CorbanWarriors.com for all of the latest updates/results.
