EUGENE, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team clinched a berth in the upcoming Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament thanks to a big upset win on Wednesday evening over No. 14-ranked Northwest Christian University, 84-71. The win came at a crucial time, not only securing Corban's berth in the conference tournament, but putting the Warriors in position to earn a good seed.
"We waited until the last game of the season to play our best basketball," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "We came out well and were hitting shots and getting stops. We went on a huge run in the second half, but became complacent, and you can't do that vs. a team like NCU. They're disciplined and well-coached."
The Warriors are currently in the No. 6 seed position, and could finish there, depending on how other results around the league go this weekend.
From start to finish, Corban came out firing, clicking offensively from downtown and from the inside. While boasting a one-point lead after one quarter, Corban then locked down defensively in the second stanza and held the No. 14 Beacons to just 12 points while extending the lead to 10 points at the break.
In the third quarter, the Warriors made it a 17 point game heading into the final stanza, and after building up a lead of more than 20 points in the fourth, NCU was unable to overcome the large deficit and Corban finished out the 13-point victory.
Maci Bozett was on absolute fire all night long, going 9-for-11 from the field, 4-for-4 from deep and 10-for-10 from the free-throw line for a career-best 32 points. On top of her performance, Jordan Woodvine went 7-for-10 from the floor for 17 points to go with seven boards, and Emily Yost almost recorded a double-double, tallying 10 points and nine boards.
As a team, Corban shot 54.0% from the floor and 72.7% from beyond the arc, nailing eight three-pointers on the evening. In addition, Corban was nearly perfect from the charity stripe, going 22-of-24 as a team from the line.
"Maci had an absolutely incredible game," said Skyles. "We shot extremely well from the two, the three, and from the free-throw line. We had way too many turnovers, but I'm super proud of our team. We had some key players really step up tonight, and that is why we go the W."
The Warriors were also very good defensively overall, holding NCU to just a 30.7% shooting mark from the field and a 26.9% shooting effort from deep.
Corban (13-14, 9-11 CCC) will wait to find out what seed it will be on Saturday evening, based on other results from around the league. The Warriors will also find out who they will play that evening, based on seeds. Stay tuned at CorbanWarriors.com for all of the latest updates to the Corban Warrior schedule.
