Corban Baseball Registers Day-One Sweep of Central Washington

KEIZER, Ore. – Clutch hitting, strong pitching, and great defense led to the Corban University baseball team sweeping its home-openers against NCAA Division II foe, Central Washington University on Friday. After the Warriors won game one and Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Stadium, 5-1, Corban then went on to edge the Wildcats in game two, 2-1.

"It was a good day to be a Warrior," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "Our pitchers came out and dominated the bottom half of the strike zone early and often. Our offense consisted of situational and timely hitting. I'm looking forward to seeing our boys repeat that competitiveness tomorrow. Thank you for all that came out to support opening day."

In game one, Central Washington actually jumped on top first, scoring a run in the first inning to nab the early advantage. Corban threatened in each of the first three innings, and eventually in the third, Ethan Bragg recorded an RBI groundout, tying the contest at 1-1.

In the fifth, Andrew Axmaker recorded a sacrifice fly, and later in the inning, it was 3-1 thanks to Corey Finlay scoring on a throwing error by the Wildcat pitcher. The Warriors scored one more in the sixth and then added another in the seventh thanks to an RBI double to right-center from Drew Loera.

From that point on, it was Kris Jackson who shined on the mound for Corban, finishing out his first complete-game win of the 2018 campaign. While going the distance, he dispersed seven hits while allowing just one run and striking out five.

At the plate, Loera went 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Jarett Thoren tallied two hits in the triumph.

Game two was another pitchers' duel, but for Corban at the plate, it was once again Loera providing the clutch hit for the Navy and Gold, blasting a two-RBI double to left-center in the third, scoring Corban's only two runs of the ballgame.

Central Washington pulled one back in the eighth, but Jonathan Russomano came on in relief and got out of a bases-loaded jam in that same frame, shutting the door on the Wildcats.

In the ninth, he finished out the save, resulting in the day-one sweep. Connor Mattison was Corban's game-two starter, and he went six innings in the victory, allowing only three hits while striking out three and giving up no runs.

At the plate in the win, Jared Bell finished as the only Warrior with a multi-hit ballgame.

Corban (8-6) is scheduled to return to the field tomorrow for another doubleheader against CWU (3-5). First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 11 a.m. at Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Stadium.
