Warrior Baseball Splits Series with Central Washington

KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team was on the verge of winning its first series of the year on Saturday afternoon and was just one out away from accomplishing that feat, but some clutch hitting brought Central Washington University back to win, ultimately earning the series split with the Warriors. After dropping the opener in 10 innings, 7-5, the Warriors dropped game two, 13-7.

"Well, we have figured out how to split the weekend every way possible, so that means we are on the verge of winning a series," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "We got better this weekend, and as long as we learned from the areas we fell short, we will be in good position going forward. Looking forward to starting conference games next weekend."

In game one, base running errors in multiple innings cost the Warriors, as Corban was unable to bring guys in on varying occasions. The Warriors also left 11 runners on base, and through the first three innings, they left eight on base. Ultimately, however, Corban was in good position to win the game, up 4-2 with two outs in the ninth, but the Wildcats stormed back and got a pair of clutch two-out hits, ultimately tying the game.

Corban then had the bases juiced again in the bottom half of the ninth, but the Warriors ran themselves into a double play, sending the game to the 10th frame.

CWU continued its offensive momentum in that extra frame, scoring three runs, while Corban would only respond with one, resulting in the tough extra-inning defeat.

Rilyn Lewchuck was Corban's starter in game one on Saturday, tossing six innings while allowing just two unearned runs and striking out six.

At the plate in the defeat, Andrew Axmaker went 3-for-6 with one RBI, while Drew Loera went 2-for-3 with an RBI as well. In addition, Jarett Thoren went 2-for-5 at the dish for the Warriors in the defeat.

The nightcap still provided an opportunity for the Warriors to nab the series win, but a wet and windy contest resulted in CWU (5-5) taking advantage of Warrior mistakes on the mound and in the field, ultimately winning, 13-7.

Despite the loss, the Warriors did smash a couple of long home runs to left field, as Andrew Axmaker blasted one over the left-field fence early on to tie the game, and Ethan Bragg lifted one high over the wall in left to jumpstart a Warrior comeback. Unfortunately for the Warriors, it was too little too late after Bragg's home run, and the Warriors fell by the six-run margin.

Corban (8-8) is scheduled to return to the field next Friday-Sunday when it hosts Oregon Tech for a conference series. First pitch on Friday at Volcanoes Stadium is slated for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
