"Today was a good way to start conference play," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "Our pitchers gave us an opportunity to win both games, and the offense got the job done when they needed to. Our energy from the dugout was very good and helped keep the momentum on our side. I'm looking forward to competing with these guys again tomorrow."
The storyline of game one was a contest dominated by Warrior senior pitcher Kris Jackson. For the second-straight week, Jackson went the distance on the mound, tossing a complete-game shutout while striking out eight batters and giving up just two hits.
At the dish, Andrew Axmaker ripped an RBI single to left field to put the Warriors on the board in the fourth, and Cole Foley added an RBI single later in the inning. In the fifth, Corban eventually made it 4-0 thanks to a Daniel Freiburger sacrifice fly.
That was all the Warriors would need, as Jackson cruised through the contest, completely dominating in all facets. Drew Loera finished 3-for-4 at the dish to lead the way, while both Axmaker and Foley finished with two hits apiece.
The second game of the day saw the Owls score on a sacrifice fly in the first frame, but the Warriors tied it up in the sixth thanks to a clutch RBI single from Jarett Thoren, scoring David Yoppini.
The game went all the way to extra innings, and it was Foley that proved to be the hero, as with no outs in the 10th frame and the bases loaded, Foley laced the game-winning RBI single to left field, scoring Axmaker from third base to win the game in walk-off fashion.
In the triumph, Loera, Ben Ross, Tanner Marsh, and Thoren all finished with two hits each. On the mound Connor Mattison threw a gem, going 8.1 innings while allowing only two hits and one run. In relief, Jackson Arnsdorf pitched 1.2 innings and earned the win, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out three.
As a team, Corban totaled 22 hits in the doubleheader to just four total hits for the Owls.
Corban (10-8, 2-0 NAIA-West) returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Oregon Tech (8-13, 0-2 NAIA-West) for another conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is slated for 11 a.m. Live stats/live video will be available HERE on WARRIOR TV.
