Corban Baseball Clinches Series Win over Owls with 8-4 Victory in Game Four

KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team clinched its first NAIA West Conference series win since the 2016 season, winning on Saturday in the final game of the series to take three out of four against Oregon Tech. After dropping the opener to the Owls, 13-1, Corban bounced back in a big way in the fourth game of the series, winning 8-4.

"I'm very proud of the boys for opening up conference with a series win against a good team," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "It is the first series win for Corban Baseball in a while, and hopefully we are able to use that momentum moving forward."

Oregon Tech jumped all over the Warriors in the third inning of game one on Saturday, as it was Kai Fong who launched a grand slam over the right-field fence to give the Owls the early 4-0 lead. The visitors would add four more in the fourth and never look back en route to the 13-1 triumph.

For Oregon Tech in the victory, Fong finished 3-for-6 at the plate with five RBI, while Blake Wrotenbury went 3-for-6 with three RBI. On the mound, John Schulz went eight innings in the triumph, allowing just four hits and one unearned run.

Game two saw Corban bounce back immediately, as after surrendering a run in the top of the first, the Warriors scored three in the bottom half of the inning. Drew Loera started things off with an RBI single to score Josh Ebert, and Daniel Freiburger went on to add an RBI triple before Andrew Axmaker's RBI single.

While Alex Poltz launched a moon shot over the right-field wall for Oregon Tech in the second to make it a one-run ballgame, the Warriors scored another run on an Ebert RBI single in the bottom half of the frame to make it 4-2.

The Owls (9-14, 1-3 NAIA West) pulled another run back in the fifth, but the Warriors exploded in the sixth for four runs, putting the game out of reach. Ethan Bragg came up with the biggest hit in that inning, ripping a two-RBI single through the left side to push the advantage to five runs.

Caleb Henry earned the victory for Corban, going 7.0 innings while dispersing five hits and allowing three runs, only two of which were earned. He also struck out five in his first win of 2018. Austin Holmes also came on in relief and put together a solid performance, tossing two innings while allowing just three hits and one run.

"We still have areas we need to improve, but our boys have shown a willingness to get better, and that is important to continue to do," said Legg. "Thank you to everyone that came out to support us. Go Warriors!"

In the triumph, Ebert finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while both Freiburger and Axmaker also tallied a pair of hits in the victory. Off the bench, David Yoppini proved to be instrumental on the base paths, scoring two runs as a pinch runner for the Navy and Gold.

Corban (11-9, 3-1 NAIA West) returns to the field next weekend for a non-conference series at Whitman College (Wash.). The series is slated for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
