WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Corban University baseball team opened up a three-game series on Saturday with a win over Whitman College. With a strong offensive performance, defense found a way to close out the game and leave the Warriors walking away with a 7-5 victory.
"The boys played well today," said Corban University head coach, Derek Legg. "We found a way to get the job done when we needed to, both on the mound and offensively. We are looking forward to getting out tomorrow with the goal in mind to win a series. That is only possible if we compete on every pitch the entire day."
With seven total runs, the Warriors were strong at the dish on Saturday despite the tight competition. After scoring the first run of the day, Josh Ebert put together a good performance, going 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored. After a surge from Whitman in the fifth, Ethan Bragg's two-RBI single was a key turning point in the game, shifting the momentum back to the Warriors. Ben Ross followed in suit with a solo homer in the eighth to clinch the game for Corban.
On the mound, Kris Jackson earned the victory throwing six innings while only allowing six hits and three runs. Austin Holmes came in following Jackson to pitch three innings, allowing only three hits and two runs to help secure the save and the Navy and Gold victory.
Corban (12-9) returns to the field tomorrow as it will fight to win the series against Whitman in a doubleheader slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
