WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Corban University baseball team clinched a series win on the road this weekend in Walla Walla Washington against Whitman University. After dropping the first game, 10-8, Corban bounced back and dominated game two, 10-4, lifting the Warriors to the series triumph.
"It was a good weekend for the boys to get a series win," said Corban head Derek Legg. "We have a big week of practice before a big conference series. I look forward to working hard this week to get prepared."
Game one highlighted the Warriors' offense. Starting off strong, Corban walked away from the first inning up 4-1 with thanks to a three-run homer from Andrew Axmaker. Ben Ross also dominated at the plate, hitting a home run in the eighth to go with two RBI.
The Warriors managed to hold their lead until the bottom of the fifth inning. The momentum of the game changed in the fifth with a homer from Whitman's Lucas Thrun who went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Whitman then scored another four runs in the eighth, leading the home side to the game-one triumph.
Game two saw Corban bounce back, but not after some tight competition in the second inning. Andrew Axmaker remained hot at the plate, again hitting a three-run homerun, scoring Freiburger and Ross. Ethan Bragg followed that up with an RBI double for a total of four runs scored for the Navy and Gold in the second inning. Whitman responded with four runs of its own in the frame, however, tying the game at 4-4.
The Warriors weren't done yet though at the plate, scoring four more runs in the third inning and shutting down Whitman defensively from that point on. Ben Ross got that big third inning started for the Warriors, blasting his second home run of the afternoon. Tanner Marsh and Josh Ebert followed with an RBI each in the third, giving Corban the momentum that it would not lose.
Caleb Henry dominated on the mound allowing for only four runs and just one earned in the five innings he pitched. Jonathan Russomano closed out the game pitching the last three innings for Corban and allowing for three hits but no runs.
The Warriors (13-10) will be taking their home field at Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Stadium next weekend where they will play the University of British Columbia. First pitch of that series is set for Saturday, March 10 at 12 pm.
