KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball bats never got going on Sunday afternoon, as UBC salvaged the final game of the series against the Warriors, winning 4-1. The series win for the Warriors against the Thunderbirds, however, was the first in program history for Corban.
"Obviously not the best way to end the series, but at the same time, I think this was a positive weekend for us," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "I'm proud of the way the guys competed. That truly is the most important part about our game. We look forward to another hard week of practice before another tough conference weekend. Thank you to all the fans that came out to watch us this weekend."
The story of the game was UBC's James Bradwell, as he went the distance on the mound, allowing just seven hits and one run while striking out eight Warrior batters.
Corban's Caleb Henry pitched well in the loss, throwing 6.1 innings while allowing just two runs and striking out three.
The Thunderbirds went ahead in the fourth frame thanks to an RBI single from Anthony Olson, and then Mitch Robinson made it 2-0 in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom half of the frame, Andrew Axmaker stole second base and Daniel Freiburger stole home, cutting the deficit in half. The Warriors had a chance to tie it that same inning, but Corban was unable to come through with the timely hit when needed.
UBC ultimately added on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth, and Bradwell closed the door, earning the complete-game performance.
Corban (16-11, 6-2 NAIA West) returns to the diamond next weekend when it heads to Caldwell to take on the College of Idaho on Saturday and Sunday.
