CALDWELL, Idaho – The Corban University baseball team dominated the opening game of a four-game conference series with the College of Idaho on the road, winning in seven innings, 13-3. The Warriors dropped the nightcap, however, 9-3, resulting in the day-one split.
"Today was an interesting day at the yard," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "After playing a good first game, we weren't able to come out and play our game in the second one. I look forward to seeing our boys bounce back with the competitiveness we need to win games tomorrow."
The Warriors have now scored 208 runs during the 2018 season up to this point. During the entirety of the 2017 campaign, the Warriors scored just 169 runs total.
In game one, the Yotes actually scored a pair of runs in the first inning on Kris Jackson to take the early lead, but the Warriors responded with four runs in the second to take back control, never looking back en route to winning via the mercy rule in seven innings.
Senior Jarett Thoren had a monster game at the dish, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Josh Ebert finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. In addition, Andrew Axmaker recorded a pair of hits and scored three times, while Ben Ross provided a bases-clearing double for three RBI in the seventh to seal the deal.
On the mound, Kris Jackson was once again dominant, dispersing four hits and allowing just three runs – only two of which were earned. He also struck out six C of I batters in the victory.
The nightcap was much different for the Warriors, as Corban fell behind midway through the contest and was unable to recover, resulting in the six-run defeat. Brock Myklebust provided a two-RBI single for the Warriors in the ninth, but that was the only real offensive highlight in the contest for Corban.
Corban (17-12, 7-3 NAIA West) returns to action on Sunday against the Yotes for another conference doubleheader, slated for 10 a.m. PT.
