CALDWELL, Idaho – Thanks to a great all-around team effort on Sunday, the Corban University baseball team downed the College of Idaho Yotes twice, capturing the series victory over the squad from Idaho thanks to a 6-2 victory and a 10-2 triumph. For the Warriors, it marks their third-straight conference series win to start the 2018 conference campaign.
"The boys played well today," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "I am happy with the way they competed in all areas today. Our dugout did a great job with energy all weekend, and that's very important for our team. We have a big week of practice ahead of us to get better."
In game one on Sunday, Rilyn Lewchuk stepped up and performed valiantly on the mound, going seven strong innings while dispersing just six hits and allowing only two runs and striking out four. Austin Holmes came on in relief and threw two solid innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.
At the plate, a number of players got it done, as Ethan Bragg led the way with a 2-for-3 showing and one run scored, while Daniel Freiburger went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. In addition, Andrew Axmaker provided a key sacrifice fly, and the Warriors forced the issue on the base paths, causing the Yotes to make a number of costly errors, resulting in the win for Corban.
The final and clinching game of the series began with a bang for the Navy and Gold, as the Warriors scored five runs through the first two frames. In those first couple of innings, it was Daniel Freiburger who came up big twice, lacing an RBI double and an RBI triple to give Corban the early advantage.
While the Yotes pulled one back in the sixth, the Warriors' offense remained relentless at the plate in the final three innings, scoring two in the seventh, two in the eighth, and one more in the ninth en route to the blowout win.
Corban finished with 18 hits as a team, and it was Freiburger who had himself a ballgame, going 4-for-5 at the dish with three RBI and three runs scored. And Freiburger just missed out on hitting for the cycle, only not blasting a home run in the great effort.
Also with a great game at the plate was Josh Ebert with a 3-for-6 showing and two RBI, while Andrew Axmaker matched Freiburger's hit total, going 4-for-5 with a team-best four RBI and one run scored.
Earning the win for Corban on the mound was senior Caleb Henry, as he dealt eight strong innings, allowing just six hits and two runs while striking out five.
Corban (19-12, 9-3 NAIA West) is set to return to action next weekend when it hosts Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho). Games are slated to be played at George Fox University's turf field next weekend due to forecasted heavy rain/potential snow and lightning.
